Kumihimo is the ancient art of Japanese Braidmaking. Throughout history silk braids were used by Samurai in the construction of their armour. Later they were adapted as a fashion item. The most common traditional use is the obi-jime, a cord used to tie around the sash of a kimono. A traditional Marudai and bobbins were used to make this kumihimo jewelry however a variety of conventional yarns, satin cords, threads and beads are combined to provide a unique look. Each braid is comprised of 8 to 32 strands weaved together to make a single braid. Braids can be finished by adding tassles to ends or an endcap can be used if making jewelry where you want to add a clasp or connector to the braid.
